The sailboat DAEDALUS takes her name from a legendary figure in Greek mythology. Daedalus* was a brilliant architect, inventor, builder, and puzzle-solver. He designed and built the Labyrinth, a maze used to imprison the half-man half-bull Minotaur. Daedalus was exploited for his knowledge and craftsmanship by King Minos and held hostage to perform tasks for him. To escape King Minos, Daedalus devised a set of wings from feathers and wax for himself and his son, Icarus. As the legend goes, during their escape, Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too closely to the sun. But Icarus, delighting in the thrill and the freedom of flight, forgot his father's warning and flew higher and higher until his wax wings melted and he fell into the sea below. The sailboat DAEDALUS was custom designed and built by her former owner, architect and mariner Capt. Fred Saas.** During her construction, many of DAEDALUS' fixtures such as cleats, winches, and portholes were salvaged from THE LAST STRAW, a 1920's 50 foot sloop. She sank off the coast of California at Point Conception after hitting rocks in a fog on her way to San Francisco to be refit. Included in DAEDALUS' hull design is a porthole below the waterline which allows an underwater view of marine life. DAEDALUS is a hearty, two-mast ketch/yawl sailboat of unique character and charm. She enjoys a rich history of racing, ocean cruising, and bay charters along the Alabama-Florida Gulf Coast. At the helm of DAEDALUS is Captain Barry Brothers. Capt. Barry is a laid-back, easy-going, yet safety-conscious boat master. He and his wife, Alice, enjoy sailing as a hobby and a way of life. Whether you SAIL THE DAEDALUS for the first time or return to experience her hospitality again, Capt. Barry and Alice, along with their crew, invite you to add to the history of DAEDALUS while creating a uniquely memorable sail for yourself and your family.
